Duality
interactive horror fiction

"In the beginning God created the heavens and the Earth..."

"It’s a cold night in Carlham town for a man to be out walking. But there you are, struggling up the path in your heavy coat with the wind snapping at you. Your name is Howard Blake: a visitor, of sorts, to the Carlham Asylum, a dark brooding building that looms up before you in the gloom. And somewhere, you know, in those godforsaken cells is Alec Murray, the madman you’re here to see."

Duality is a text-adventure that tells the stories of both men: on the one hand, you play as Howard Blake, explore Carlham Asylum and struggle to get the truth from Alec. And on the other hand you play as Alec, reliving his hideous experiences, desperate to stop fiendish occult forces and prevent the downfall of the human race. Spanning four chapters, Duality is an original work that takes inspiration from H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos (or, if you’d prefer, his philosophy of Yog-Sothothery) but uses elements from demonology.

"The moon is bone-white, the chill is cruel and biting. You shiver, huddling further into your worn coat and stagger on, through the whispering wind, shielding your eyes from the dirt and leaf fragments whipped up by the gusts. Your teeth clatter in your skull, your eyes ache with the cold. Tired, and weary, you step up to the great, rusted gates looming before you."

The game is a text-adventure and, as such, it’s full of text and little else. No explosions, I’m afraid. It’s essentially a digital game-book, where you choose your next action from a selection at the bottom of the screen. It comes in a selection of fonts: Times New Roman, Arial, Arial Bold or Verdana. On top of this, you can choose to display the text as white-on-black or black-on-white, to allow everyone to pick a configuration that is comfortable to read.

Also, this game contains some demonic imagery, rituals and quotes from some occult books. Most of the text is entirely fictitious but there are one or two passages that are taken from actual books of demonology. I take no responsibility for whether or not you take this seriously and try and perform one of the rituals in this game or summon a demon. For one thing, some of the rituals are downright creepy and harmful. And for another, they’re entirely fictitious and wouldn’t work anyway.
